Law Center Writing Support Partnership with the UH Writing Center
To the incoming law student:
Greetings. Since 2003, faculty and administrators of the University of Houston Law Center have partnered with the UH Writing Center to provide flexible writing support for incoming law students.
Our experience has shown that students coming from a variety of schools and academic backgrounds into the study of the law may have trouble adjusting to the intensive writing requirements of law school, and we are committed to offering help early and in a variety of forms.
To begin with, we are providing several assessment tools to help you evaluate whether you might want to seek extra help with your writing. Before you come on campus for orientation, you will be asked to complete a Writing Diagnostic Assessment, which will be objectively scored using a custom-designed rubric. You will also be asked to complete an online self-assessment that will help you identify strengths and weaknesses in your study skills. Combining the results of these assessments with reflection on your undergraduate academic program and performance (GPA) will give you a sound basis for deciding whether to seek help.
If you decide you’d like to get extra help, we can suggest a variety of options.
The Law Center operates a Legal Writing Center, which is especially helpful for the specific requirements of legal writing. Your Lawyering Skills and Strategies faculty will be able to help you with the specific requirements for your courses.
The UH Writing Center (conveniently located near the Law Center in the University Classroom and Business Building #499) can offer you individual writing consultations, either face-to-face or online, using our WCONLINE scheduler to reserve appointments for General Writing Consultations (30 minutes), Graduate Writing Consultations (60 minutes), or Online Writing Consultations.
Visit our website at: www.uh.edu/writecen and select “Schedule Appointments” tab on our home page to find out more about scheduling writing consultations.
We can also offer you customized writing support—contact me and I will put you in touch with the staff member who can best meet your particular needs.
With my best wishes for your success in law school,
Steven P. Liparulo , Ph. D.
Associate Director, UH Writing Center
