Disciplinary Ownership of Writing

Writing In the Disciplines expert Jonathan Monroe notes that "the responsibility for writing should be vested in the disciplines where this work takes place." The Writing Center can help faculty take advantage of the new Core Curriculum designation to expand disciplinary ownership of writing instruction by offering expert support in designing courses that meet the new Core requirements. Learning by Writing

The UH Writing Center stands by a philosophical conviction that “writing is thinking,” and in our work to support writing instruction throughout the university curriculum, we emphasize the formative role writing plays in knowledge creation. Faculty are encouraged to utilize writing as a learning resource in a variety of roles appropriate to their teaching practices.

Effectively Communicating Expectations

Students produce stronger writing and are more comfortable immersing themselves in the writing process when they fully understand instructor expectations. Writing Center experts in pedagogy and instructional design are available to consult with faculty on writing assignments within their course in order to ensure that expectations and evaluation criteria are being effectively conveyed to students. This often increases student investment and results in higher quality writing that can reduce the grading workload.
